1. 讓人討厭的;糟糕的 If you say that someone or something is awful, you dislike that person or thing or you think that they are not very good.
e.g. We met and I thought he was awful... 我們見(jiàn)了面,我覺(jué)得他很討人厭。 e.g. I couldn't stand London! Bloody awful place. 我在倫敦再也呆不下去了!簡(jiǎn)直是個(gè)糟糕至極的地方。
awfulness The programme's awfulness has ensured it is talked about. 節目如此糟糕,肯定會(huì )被人議論。
2. 使人不愉快的;令人震驚的;可怕的;極壞的 If you say that something is awful, you mean that it is extremely unpleasant, shocking, or bad.
e.g. Her injuries were massive. It was awful... 她遍體鱗傷。太可怕了。 e.g. Some of their offences are so awful they would chill the blood. 他們的一些罪行駭人聽(tīng)聞,簡(jiǎn)直令人毛骨悚然。
3. 生病的;不舒服的 If you look or feel awful, you look or feel ill.

e.g. I hardly slept at all and felt pretty awful... 我基本上沒(méi)睡,覺(jué)得很難受。 e.g. I looked awful and felt quite shaky. 我貌似生病了,覺(jué)得很虛弱。
4. (量)極大的,極多的 You can use awful with noun groups that refer to an amount in order to emphasize how large that amount is.
e.g. I've got an awful lot of work to do. 我有一大堆事情要做。
awfully The caramel looks awfully good... 黃油奶糖看上去非常好吃。 'I'm awfully sorry,' she told him regretfully... “我非常抱歉”,她懊悔地向他說(shuō)道。 Would you mind awfully waiting a bit, I'll be back right away. 不介意稍微等一會(huì )兒吧,我馬上就回來(lái)。
5. (與表示特征的形容詞連用,用于強調)極度地,非常 You can use awful with adjectives that describe a quality in order to emphasize that particular quality.
